cypress grove

The original room was a previously, converted garage with low floor and concrete roof levels which was used as a doctor’s surgery waiting area with an east west orientation. The brief was to enhance the cavernous space and connect it back into the existing house fabric.

The appearance from the road is one of solidity with Opal glass and the timber sheeted door providing privacy. When one approaches, this is diluted with clear glass sections allowing the visitor and proprietor to view one another. The floor level is stepped down to signify an entry point with a lower roof section defining a porch. The inner porch doors and large hinged screen allow connection back into the existing front rooms for entertaining. Raising the floor and roof levels created a clearstory to the front and rear, rooflights further animate the light with new openings to the inner dining room allowing light illuminate the exiting house. A pivot and sliding door connect the kitchen to the new room.
