woodbine

The project involved the elimination of a typical 1970s style kitchen edition which was entirely too small for the growing family.

The client required a larger room which would become an innovative family area. The rear garden is not overshadowed and has an excellent southerly aspect. The new room was positioned on the north side of the garden whilst maintaining the back access.

The room is enclosed with a simple folding plane and a roof box which protrudes above. The roof comprises various locations of glazing to highlight the movement of the sun.

The room is docked into the existing house to provide a seating area. The folding plane is stopped short to create a rooflight which illuminates an otherwise dark space.

The southerly elevation is broken into three elements. A day-to-day access door, a solid wall and series of disappearing sliding doors are all provided for greater connection to the garden. Thus, extending the room and availing of the southerly aspect. A long horizontal window is positioned at the height of one sitting. This is where the dining occurs.

The other reception rooms are re-orientated towards the garden by means of enlarging the original 1930s styled opening with full height, glazed doors.
